Course Description

Sleep deprivation in children has a significant impact on several functional capabilities. This course describes those functional attributes of every day living that are compromised by sleep deprivation such as learning, academic performance, cognitive function, mood regulation, etc. The causes and impact of daytime somnolence are discussed, as well as differential diagnosis of sleep problems in ADHD. Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to outline the causes and impact of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in children, review the evidence linking sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in children to adverse neurobehavioral outcomes, discuss potential mechanisms and confounding factors for neurobehavioral deficits in pediatric sleep disordered breathing, discuss treatment options for SDB in children, and discuss limb movement disorders and their relationship to sleep deprivation in children.
