Course Description
This course focuses on the impact of cultural and social perceptions of the elderly which results in abuse and/or neglect. Individual prejudice, learning deficiencies, and communication barriers all contribute to such elder-abuse and neglect. An in-depth understanding of the cultural and social perceptions that lead to elder abuse will enable the sleep professional to recognize potentially dangerous situations in clinical environments and apply appropriate interventions to prevent further abuse. The course discusses the prevalence such abuse and neglect in the United States, focusing on many of the psycho-social perspectives that lead to the malady. Many federal and industry definitions have been developed, and specific categories of abuse are discussed and revealed. Abuse takes on many forms, and the discussion reveals that the elderly is at significant risk for both sexual harassment and criminal negligence. It is incumbent on health care providers in the sleep industry to recognize abuse and neglect when it is presented, examine the etiology, and take appropriate reporting steps and remedies that result in safer elder environments.
