Course Description

The use of oral appliances for treatment of snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnea is effective with collaboration between the sleep specialist and the dental specialist.  Assessment of the clinical status and co-morbid risk factors, the patient preferences, and individual responses to therapy provides the best information to effectively treat patients with oral appliances in accordance with the practice parameters supported by the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.

Understanding the differences of appliances, which are approved by the FDA for therapy, requires careful evaluation and frequent monitoring by the dental expert.  Clinically, follow-up care is required by the treating dentist to confirm that the temporal mandibular joint is positioned appropriately, and the oral device is fitted to prevent changes in occlusion.  A dentist with adequate experience works with patient to adjust the appliance to sustain enduring wear and tear.
